Welcome to the University of Birmingham, and welcome to DocsNotCops!
DocsNotCops UoB is a group dedicated to advocating for migrants’ rights to healthcare in the NHS. In 2017, NHS England introduced new policies which force trusts to charge patients who cannot provide ID to prove their eligibility for treatments including (but not limited to) cancer, maternity, ante-natal, and paediatrics. As healthcare students, we believe that health is a human right, not a privilege and that healthcare professionals should not have to act as border control.
Over the last few years, we have delivered talks and events to educate on health inequalities and how we can begin to eliminate discrimination against the migrant community as well as worked with the local migrant community to best understand Birmingham specific issues that can improve. Our conferences have explored health in conflict as well as health inequalities in mental health and climate change. We are proud to support the University of Sanctuary’s brilliant work to increase the number of scholarship places for refugees at UoB. We hope, with your help, to continue spreading awareness and aid the migrant community in eliminating these injustices. So we would love like-minded, passionate people to join us to create a better future for the NHS.
This upcoming year we are excited to continue to advocate for migrants, put on more fantastic events for our members, carry out primary research and continue to work with the national campaign! Although our society is small, our work is undeniably important and life-changing.
Our society has received university wide recognition and gained us the Medsoc Charity of the Year (2023) and the Small Group Big Impact award (2023).
We would love to expand our support this next academic year, and you do not have to be an expert on these issues to join and make a difference! So look out for our upcoming campaigns, events, and conferences with incredible guest speakers!
